What is visceral and neural manipulation?

“Viscera” relates to the internal organs of the body, such as the intestines, liver, and kidneys. Visceral Manipulation is designed to provide pain relief by treating problems with the movement of our organs relative to each other and the rest of our bodies. It assesses and treats the structural relationships between organs and their attachments to the ligaments and fascia. Surgical scars, adhesions, illness, posture, or injury can cause strains in the connective tissues of this system. Our body compensates for these strains, developing functional or structural problems that can be far from the site of restriction.

Neural Manipulation assists the free movement of the nerves in their surroundings; that is, in relation to neighbouring muscles, fascia, narrow passages in the aponeurosis, organs and bones. A nerve can only function properly when it is able to move freely in its surrounding tissues.

Both Visceral and Neural Manipulation are manual therapy practices that use light, gentle, and precise manipulation forces that encourage alignment, mobility, tone and own natural mechanisms of the visceral organs, the nerves, and their supporting connective tissues. Both manipulations are especially helpful in those suffering from trauma, postural strain, and chronic stress or pain.

These manipulations have the possibility to affect the normal physiological function of specific nerves and organs, their function and related systems and the structural integrity of the entire body. Little and precisely directed manipulation usually creates the greatest effects due to the gentle and often highly reactive nature of neural and visceral tissues. The therapist feels tension that is within the client's body, any altered or decreased motion within the visceral and neural systems, as well as patterns of restriction they have created throughout the body. This therapy can help facilitate the body’s ability to adapt and repair itself to health and homeostasis.
